In your restorative practice, do you ever feel like you’re in a power struggle?
Giving unwanted advice?
Feeling like the conversation is going in circles?
Join us for this two part training. This training will focus on the Motivational Interviewing techniques of asking Open Ended Questions and giving Affirmations, Reflections, and Summaries (OARS). Developed by staff from local Community Justice Centers, this interactive workshop, will allow you to sharpen your communication skills, learn how to encourage others to make their own positive decisions without lecturing, and create true working partnerships.
The OARS technique provides simple and effective communication strategies for difficult conversations around conflict and behavior change. During the training, you will build a framework for using OARS in your restorative practices. Training activities will focus on hands-on application and role play along with ample time for questions and review.

Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right.
Join the Essex Community Justice Center for a screening of Coming Home followed by a discussion panel with Director Bess O’Brien and CoSA Researcher Kathy Fox.
Coming Home is a documentary film focused on five people returning back to their Vermont communities from prison. The film focuses on the innovative COSA program (Circles of Support and Accountability) that helps reintegrate folks back into their community and their daily lives. The COSA program is run through Vermont’s Community Justice Centers and is part of the restorative justice model. COSA’s are made up of 3-4 trained volunteers that wrap around the person reentering their community (referred to as “core member”) and meet weekly for a year. The purpose of CoSA is to ensure that there are no more victims while supporting and connecting the core member to their community in a positive way, help reduce recidivism and enhance community safety.
Watch the strong bonds of support, friendship and accountability develop within their CoSAs and watch them create new bonds, make amends with old friends and family, work on their recovery from addiction, get new jobs, housing and start their lives from scratch. The film follows the ups and downs of these five individuals and the powerful relationships that they build with their COSA team volunteers.
The film is a moving portrayal of the complicated societal forces and three unique individuals trying to navigate their life, after parole.
After discovering that a nanny has sexually abused his daughter, the most powerful lobbyist in the state of Florida harness-es his extraordinary political power to pass the toughest sex offender laws in the nation. “Untouchable” is a film that push-es viewers toward an uncomfortable place, requiring them to walk in the shoes of those who have suffered sexual abuse, but to still bear witness to the experiences of those we most fear. This film was directed and produced by David Feige.
